Note the sticker on Rahiem's hand, chosen for him by his little girl. After all, he IS a Director of the Alliance....

We are only as resilient as our relationships are strong.

Best message from Waterfest?? Let’s keep learning and sharing and designing together!  Even in the rain, there were nearly 150 people at Waterfest committed to caring for our waterways and by extension all life in the Mystic River Watershed. In addition to good free food (thanks to CT SeaGrant and NOAA) and 20 tables full of learning and fun, one of the best things to come out of the Waterfest was the joy and hope we felt when we gathered together under the tent to listen to and learn from each other. We agreed we wanted to keep it going.  Derrick Strong offered the name Driftwood Conversation Circles which immediately resonated because of our desire to have a theme to draw people’s thinking out but not a narrowing one–we want to see what pops to the surface and let ourselves be supported by the water that connects us all.

Another thing that’s important to note is that beautiful driftwood is also a relationship between forest and water, fuel, food, home, art, and beauty. Gazing upon it inspires connection, creativity and design.  Our Driftwood Conversation Circles are meant to lead into Design Circles, too.  We’ll be selecting issues that motivate us strongly and creating a plan for next steps to learn more about it, imagine and plan for new approaches or solutions, and strategize together for how to get it done. These community-generated ideas will shape the Watershed Resilience Action Plan!  And the listening, learning, designing, strategizing, and taking action together will not stop as long as there are relationships to be tended and lives that are woven together in this amazing place.

Check your calendars and block out some time to meet and conspire with other folks who are just as concerned as you are. Call in your neighbors and friends, kids and elders! As our Youth Council is fond of saying, "if you're old enough to care, you're old enough."
